Time and Tide
I seem to be at that time of life when you look back, reflect and begin to draw together the strands of the body of work that you have made - in my case the work that I have created since I first entered art school in 1961. Rather than document or archive the work I have been trying to reform it by projecting the images onto moving flickering, translucent surfaces capturing the illusive quality of what existed - or rather what seems to have existed in my minds eye.
With hindsight and from this vantage point it is clear that there is a key theme that has consistently run like a thread through my work. The notion of non-permanence, erosion, loss and transience explored through the use of the sequential and time framed images.
The images that I have chosen to exhibit for 4 are no more than a sequence of photographs that were taken while walking along a shoreline and a hidden backwater in Dorset - where I was absorbed exploring the use of a new fish-eye lens.
On one particular walk I took the sequence which I later called ‘Looking for Bob Knee’. In my formative years he was a great influence when I was at Southend Art School. He came to mind as my own reflection appeared in the murky water – as this particular image reminded me of his work.
